Minneapolis, MN, April 25, 2010 -- Moderate Progressive Republican candidate for Governor Bob Carney Jr. congratulates Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher for her DFL endorsement in Duluth. But Carney also challenged Republican candidate Marty Seifert.
"According to the Star Tribune's 'Hot Dish Politics', Marty said in his congratulations to Speaker Kelliher: 'While the Republican Party will be united behind one candidate in less than a week, the DFL will have a bruising primary battle for months.' Whoh! Both Leslie Davis and I are running in the Republican primary," Carney said.
Carney is not planning to do any bruising. "But I do plan to raise some important challenges, including on the issue of unallotment, and more generally on the question of what the word 'Republican' means. I think today's GOP has lost sight of that meaning," Carney said. Carney also continues to lay claim to the word 'Progressive.' "I'll be working hard to re-introduce people to the historical meaning of both of these words," Carney said.
Carney does not have signatures required to be nominated at next week's Republican convention, and to address the convention. "I doubt this will happen before the convention starts. I have also obtained a copy of the legal agreement required to receive an e-mail list of delegates. I cannot accept the terms, and am no longer seeking the e-mail list," Carney said. Carney plans to provide more information about this after the convention. "I plan to be at the GOP convention Friday, but I am not certain to what degree I will be able to participate," Carney said. Carney is seeking a floor pass.
Last Wednesday evening, Carney was at a public access videotaping of Toni Bachdahl, one of the main organizers of the Minnesota Tea Party movement. "Tony and I had a great conversation, with two others, at Curran's Restaurant after the videotaping," Carney said. "The four of us talked about two hours. I'm looking forward to working with the Tea Party folks this year also," Carney said.
No word from Minnesota Supreme Court on accelerated review
All filings are now complete regarding Carney's petition to the Minnesota Supreme Court for accelerated review of Carney's legal challenge to the Pawlenty administration's unallotment and "elimination" of the Political Contribution Refund program for the current biennium. There is no word yet as to whether the Supreme Court will or will not accept the case for accelerated review.
Carney accepts U.S. Census Enumerator employment; raises Hatch Act issue
This weekend Carney began training as a United States Census Enumerator. He accepted the position about a week ago. At the time, Carney told the person who hired him that he was a candidate for political office, but was told that as long as he didn't discuss politics on the job, that would not be a problem for the temporary census position.
However, yesterday, during home reading as part of his first day of training, Carney read that candidates for partisan political office were not allowed to be Enumerators. "I called my supervisor to self-report this issue," Carney said. Carney and the supervisor will discuss this further next Friday. For the time being, it was agreed that since Carney has not yet filed for the primary, he can proceed, pending further discussion and an internal review of the situation by the Census administration, and/or the Department of Justice. Carney will provide further information as this situation develops.
During Carney's testing for the position, no mention was made of a prohibition regarding candidacy. The Enumerator positions are temporary positions, lasting two months or less.
