Minneapolis, MN, June 25, 2010 -- Candidate/journalist Bob Carney Jr. has released "Tom and me -- episode one", the first youtube.com video in a planned series, reporting on Carney's primary election challenge to Republican endorsed Tom Emmer. The video is on-line at www.republicancontract.com. On youtube.com enter "bobcarneyvideos" in the search box.
"Minnesota Republican primary voters deserve answers from Tom Emmer -- I'm going after him," Carney said.
This
is Carney's second time on a Minnesota ballot. "When I ran for Mayor of
Minneapolis in 2009, my perception was that the entire election process
was suppressed. The result was a record low voter turnout. We continue to
have no elected Republicans in Minneapolis. This year, I see the same
pattern in the Republican primary for Governor. Mr. Emmer is refusing to
talk about issues or plans until after the primary," Carney said.
Carney is demanding that Emmer participate in three videotaped discussions. The first is on the proper role of a Governor in a "...republican form of government...", a phrase from both our Federal and State Constitutions. Carney is advancing "A Minnesota Republican Governor's Contract with Voters" -- an eight point contract focusing on the process of a republican form of government. The second topic is unallotment, and what Carney perceives as a related assault on Minnesota's public campaign finance system. The third is a catch-all, focusing on the first amendment's right of the people to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Carney said: "I see a lot of grievances today, focused primarily on the economy. Minnesota voters have a right to answers: what does Mr. Emmer advocate for redressing these grievances, at both the State and Federal level?"
Carney -- who describes himself as a candidate/journalist -- is not just covering his own campaign. John Uldrich, a candidate in the Independence party primary, has agreed to a videotaped discussion with Carney on the Governor's proper role. Carney plans to cover Uldrich's 9 AM news conference today at the Capitol, across the hall from the Secretary of State's office. "During the Minneapolis Mayoral election, candidates worked and campaigned together. I hope some of us do that this year too," Carney said.
If
Emmer does not agree to videotaped discussions, Carney's Tom and me
series will cover the same discussion topics, piecing together Emmer's
views and positions from his web site and other published sources -- and
exposing their consequences. Tom and me -- episode two is scheduled
for release next week, and will look at the Governor's role in a
republican form of government. "I will pay particular attention to a
proposed Constitutional amendment Mr. Emmer co-authored last year. This
amendment represents not nullification, but outright secession," Carney
said.
The 2010 Republican primary election for Governor
Tom and me -- episode one presents direct primary elections in their historical context. Carney narrates:
"Let's be clear -- we nominate candidates in a primary election -- not at an endorsing convention. Direct primary elections are a reform from the progressive movement, led overwhelmingly by Republicans in the early 1900's. Direct primaries take control away from party machines, and let the people nominate candidates."
A May 14th MinnPost article includes this statement by Marty Seifert (emphasis added):
"Many of the delegates selected at the February caucuses and later to the state convention were unusually new. Many at the meet-and-greets proudly told me, 'I am not a Republican' — which seemed odd, because they were becoming delegates to the state Republican convention."
"I'm demanding that the 'Money Media' tell Minnesotans there is a REPUBLICAN primary election this year. The fact that about 2,000 people assembled at the Minneapolis Convention Center last May to nominate a secessionist for Governor of Minnesota certainly is news. Unfortunately, this group calls itself Republican. That's just fraud. As Marty Seifert said: 'Many of the delegates... proudly told me, "I am not a Republican."' The modern Republican party formed to preserve the union -- not to destroy it. In my judgment, a money-and-special-interest-driven national regime has taken over the so-called 'Minnesota Republican party', and has foreclosed on the political homes of hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans. It's time for me and my fellow Republicans... REPUBLICANS... to defend the meaning of OUR word, and to take back OUR political home. It is the height of irony that these people should call others 'Republican In Name Only!" Carney said.
Carney concludes Tom and me -- episode one with these words:
"Last year the establishment and the 'Money Media' suppressed municipal elections in Minneapolis. This year they're trying to do the same thing for Tom Emmer and the whole 'Money Media' ticket. There are primary elections for Governor this year for all three major parties in Minnesota. 'We the People' need to challenge the establishment and the 'Money Media.' I'm asking for your vote in this year's Minnesota Republican primary for Governor. If you vote in another primary, I hope you'll look beyond the 'Money Menu'."
"Here's my position -- quite bluntly. The Carney/McGaughey gubernatorial ticket is the only one on the Minnesota Republican primary ballot standing between our Minnesota Republican party and insanity," Carney said.
