Minneapolis, MN, September 27, 2010 -- Entrepreneurs John Uldrich and Bob Carney Jr. filed today as a write-in ticket for Governor of Minnesota. They will hold a news conference Tuesday, September 28th at 10 AM in Room 125 of the State Capital, to present their budget, and to answer questions about the campaign.
Their campaign's first 60 second commercial will soon be airing on cable television, and will answer a heretofore unknown mystery of the iconic 1973 "Good Life in Minnesota" Time Magazine cover -- who caught the fish? Uldrich knows -- he's the only other person in the Time cover photo -- right between Governor Wendell Anderson and the world famous northern pike.
Uldrich finished third in
this year's independence primary for Governor, with 1,766 votes and 10%
statewide. Uldrich is now running as a Republican -- returning to his political
affiliation for most of his life. Carney finished second in this year's
Republican primary for Governor, with 9,856 votes and 8% statewide. "I'm glad
John has returned to the Republican fold -- the party needs help. And let's
remember, John and I together received more votes in the August primary than Tom
Horner," Carney said.
The Uldrich-Carney Budget
"We can't have business as usual while the government ignores a private sector depression," Uldrich said. Uldrich's budget includes temporary tax increases of $2.7 billion -- most will sunset in two years, and almost all in four years.
According to Uldrich, "We've had a decade of accounting gimmicks -- squeeze the budget balloon on one end, and watch property taxes swell at the other end. We need to cut Government pay and benefits -- not people, jobs, and services. It is fundmentally unjust to have higher wages, benefits and job security in the public sector, while the private sector has suffered a decade of job losses, and falling wages and benefits, with no end in sight. With my plan, everyone in the public sector gets a haircut."
Uldrich continued: "But we need to buy time. My first budget is one fourth spending cuts, and half temporary taxes that sunset in two years. That's what Governor Al Quie did -- and it worked. We need to delay the school repayment -- but I won't cut K12 spending."
Uldrich and Carney agree
with both the Republican nominee, Tom Emmer and with Governor Pawlenty, that
government spending at all levels must be reined in. However, this must be done
by the Legislature, and it will take time. Both Uldrich and Carney are worried
that Tom Emmer would use unallotment to try to grab power and authority from the
Legislature, with chaos as the result.
A proven leader, with "boots on the ground" real world experience
Uldrich's career has given him unique preparation to serve as Governor. After studying at Saint John's University, he joined the Marines in 1956. In 1960, he graduated from Saint John's, and co-founded the Vexliar Engineering Company, the forerunner of Vexilar Inc. The company's first product was a simple device to find the depth of a lake, and the temperature at the bottom. Sonor equipment soon followed, with graphs finding both the contour of a lake bottom, and great local schools -- of fish. Today, Vexilar is a manufacturer and international marketing company of marine electronics and a related consumer-oriented product line.
After Uldrich sold Vexilar, his work included:
Marketing/management/communications consultant, multi-media syndication services.
First Executive Director, Range Business Assistance Center, Hibbing, Minnesota. A new business start up and retention project to serve the depressed Iron Range area of Northern Minnesota.
First Executive Director, Owatonna New Business Incubator. Owatonna, MN.
Executive Director, Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, PA.
Editor in chief, Praetorian Gate, a non-profit small press specializing in military issues.
Taught two terms (one year) Shanghai Finance College (Futures and Options, International Finance), Shanghai Fisheries University (one term), Fudan University (one term) and University of Shanghai Science & Technology (five terms). Subjects taught: marketing, management, and mass media communications.
Patient Advocate at the Veterans Medical Center in Minneapolis (VAMC).
Author of a trilogy of "Da Vinci Code" genre novels.
Update on Carney's unallotment lawsuit
The Court of Appeals
Conference is scheduled for October 6th. Because Carney's appeal is pro se, and
he is not an attorney, oral argument is not allowed, and the conference is
closed to the public. Carney plans to file a motion asking for an accelerated
decision if possible -- so that eligible candidates and political parties can
participate in the program. Both the Emmer and Horner campaigns are eligible to
participate -- the Dayton campaign is not.
Carney's role as a "candidate - journalist"
Carney plans to continue this role, focusing on the budget proposals of candidates for Governor. He will expand his video series, which is now "Tom, and Mark, and John, and the other Tom, and me". Episode four will now be a "catch up" episode on what's happened since the primary.
