About
this
site

Here are two initial options, with a third, called "something else" if neither is acceptable to you.  Note: this assumes we will have at least 25 resumes.  If we have fewer, I'll e-mail everyone and we could do something simpler.

e-mail comments or questions

Part one -- selecting finalists.

Option A) I will pick 5 finalists  -- I'll put together some simple screening criteria, go through the resumes, pick up to 10 people to interview by phone, and select 5 finalists.  My goal will be to try to have some diversity among the finalists for things like age, background, and geography.

Option B) A Committee picks 5 finalists  -- Same as above, except that I will select members of a committee, instead of 5 finalists.  Depending on the number of resumes received, I may filter them initially before sending them to the committee.  The committee will be asked to try to achieve diversity among the finalists.  The committee will all be required to confirm in writing that they will keep all resumes in confidence.

Option C) If you don't like either A or B, please suggest something else, or just vote "something else" and hope someone comes up with a better idea.  If option C) gets a significant percent of votes, I'll select one or two other ideas, and send an e-mail to everyone who has voted on the selection process.

Part two -- nominating

We will pick a location somewhere in the Twin Cities, and hold a relatively brief convention.  One purpose will be to coordinate the efforts of people who file for the Legislature.  We may also meet as a nominating convention for Governor.

Before the convention, I will try to contact both Governor Pawlenty, and other announced candidates, and ask if they are willing to agree 100% to the Republican Governor's Contract with Voters.  I will report by e-mail on responses to the Contract (if any).  If one or more candidates agrees to everything or almost everything, then everyone who has submitted a resume will vote by e-mail on whether to:

a) accept the agreement, or agreements, to the Contract and  not have a convention, or

b) go ahead with the convention.

A majority of e-mailed votes will decide.

If no one agrees to everything, or almost everything, then we'll have to consider our next step, which would probably be to nominate candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor to run in the primary.

If we meet as a nominating  convention for Governor, the meeting should probably last about 3 hours.
* Each candidate will speak (probably
    10 minutes each).
* We will deliberate in small groups, by
legislative district,  for about half an hour to
discuss the candidates, and to also ask if
anyone is interesting in filing for the Legislature.
* We will vote, eliminating one candidate per
ballot until we have a Governor and Lt.
     Governor candidate
* A campaign committee will be formed.
* We will pass out reimbursement forms so
anyone who wants to contribute up to $50
to the campaign can do so and be
reimbursed by the state, if eligible.

Depending on outstate interest, there may be some meetings outstate, where people can either listen in by speaker phone or watch a video of the candidates, and then phone in their votes.

We will collect somewhere between $1 to $5 from everyone at the door, to pay for the facility cost, possibly to reimburse me for direct expenses up to the convention (the Star Trib ads, the web site), and to put some initial money into the campaign treasury.
